How to read these tables
- — means fewer than 10 deaths. The CDC does not publish these numbers, to protect the privacy of the people who died and their families. It does not mean zero.
- * means 20 or fewer deaths. The CDC calls numbers this small “unstable.”
- no data means the CDC had no data for that state that year, usually because the state had not yet joined the reporting system.
- California, Florida and Texas reported only some of their counties, so their numbers are lower than the full-state picture would be.
- The “All reporting states” row is the CDC’s national total. It includes the small counts hidden as “–“, so it is larger than the sum of the numbers shown.
- Because more states joined each year, the national totals rise from 2018 to 2023. To compare years, use rates; see Year by year, 1976-2023.
