State Maps, 1998-2000

The Silent Witness National Initiative published these maps of women killed by intimate partners in 1998, 1999 and 2000. The maps do not name their source; other Silent Witness pages of that time cite the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports, so that is most likely where the numbers came from. The original maps showed rates per 1,000,000 people. They have been redrawn here per 100,000 people (each rate divided by 10) so they read the same way as our newer statistics. The colors match the originals.

Reading these maps

  • Rates are women 18 and older killed by an intimate partner, per 100,000 people in the state (all ages, men and women).
  • NA = not available. NR = not reported. INC = incomplete.
  • Illinois counts are Chicago only, and Massachusetts counts do not include Boston (noted on the old Silent Witness state pages for 1995-2000). In 1999 both are marked INC (incomplete).
  • 1999: the Alaska figure is blurry on the original map; the old Silent Witness Alaska page lists 5 women killed that year, which fits a rate of about 8 per million (about 0.8 per 100,000). The exact figure is not confirmed.

These maps cannot be compared number-for-number with the 2023 map. The 2023 numbers come from the CDC, and the 2023 rates are per 100,000 women 18 and older rather than per 100,000 of all residents, so they read about twice as high.
